Amidst the protest in Panjab University over the delay in elections to its governing body—Senate, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari raised the issue in the Lok Sabha today. “People are of the view that the government wants to abolish the Senate. The government should immediately notify and conduct elections to the Senate,” Tewari spoke during the Zero Hour, choosing Punjabi as the medium.

On November 8, Tewari had reached the protest site in the PU campus and had promised to raise the issue in the Parliament.

Mentioning the history of the university, Tewari said that according to the Panjab University Act, 1947, the PU was to be governed by the Senate. “The Senate’s tenure ended on October 31, and according to the Act, the elections should be notified 240 days before the tenure ends. But this time, the elections were not notified,” he said.
