Tenders for lifting spring water for public toilets soon
The Municipal Corporation of Shimla is set to issue tenders for a new initiative to supply spring water to public toilets, aiming to conserve drinking water. This decision was made during a meeting led by Mayor Surender Chauhan, where officials presented an estimated budget of Rs 45 lakh for the project.
Key benefits of scheme
- Water Conservation: Using spring water in public toilets will reduce the demand on drinking water supplies
- Cost-Effective: The estimated cost of Rs 45 lakh for implementation is relatively low compared to the long-term benefits
- Environmental Benefits: Conserving drinking water will also help reduce the strain on Shimla’s water treatment facilities
The plan involves sourcing spring water from local springs to supply 15 identified public toilets, including locations near the lift, Khalini, Kanlog, Chotta Shimla, Nav Bahar, and Tutikandi, as part of a pilot project. The Mayor emphasised that using spring water for toilets, instead of potable water used in households, could significantly reduce water consumption.
Currently, Shimla’s public toilets, of which there are approximately 120 across the town’s 34 wards, rely on drinking water for daily use. The city requires around 45 to 47 million liters of water daily, making water conservation initiatives crucial.
The Mayor stated, “If the scheme is successful, it will be expanded to all public toilets located near spring water sources.” This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable water management in the face of increasing demands for this vital resource.
