The family of Tejpal Singh, who died fighting for Russia in the war against Ukraine, today approached the district administration to get a DNA test of Tejpal’s mother Sarabjit Kaur conducted.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said his office had not received any official communication for the DNA profiling. He said the family’s claim of receiving an e-mail would be verified and they were ready to get the DNA test conducted.

Thori said they had dispatched a communique to the Principal Secretary, Department of Home Affairs and Justice, Chandigarh, to take up the matter to bring back the mortal remains of Tejpal Singh with the Department of Home Affairs, New Delhi.

Civil Surgeon Dr Sumit Singh accepted that he had never encountered such a case in which an Indian national died fighting for another country and the Health Department would have to conduct the DNA test. He said they get the DNA profiling done after being approached by the police.

He said there was no government facility to conduct the DNA test in Amritsar. The Civil Surgeon said upon receiving instructions from the district administration, his office would approach its headquarters in Chandigarh, which boasts of the DNA testing lab.

Alleging non-cooperation from officials, Parminder Kaur, spouse of Tejpal, said she visited the Sadar police station, the Civil Surgeon’s office and the District Administrative Complex in this regard yesterday.

Today Parminder claimed that she received a call from the office of Deputy Commissioner to visit his office on Monday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Abhimanyu Rana said he was not aware of Tejpal’s family visiting the police station. He added that since the matter had been brought to his notice, he would send the police team to his residence.

Parminder said two cops visited her house in the evening and collected the documents to initiate the process.
