Tax collector booked for accepting Rs 50K bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has registered a bribery case against Gurjit Singh, Tax Collector, posted in Block Development and Panchayats Office (BDPO), Khuian Sarwar, for demanding a Rs 50,000 bribe.
A VB spokesperson said the case has been registered against the Tax Collector based on a complaint lodged by Sunil Kumar, a resident of Diwan Khera village, in Abohar on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line.
The spokesperson said during the inquiry, it was found that the complainant has been running a building material shop in Khuian Sarwar village and has provided construction materials on different occasions to six village panchayats amounting to Rs 8.6 lakh.
He said the Tax Collector had demanded Rs 1.2 lakh from the complainant to clear the pending bills and had allegedly taken Rs 50,000 in this regard.
Subsequently, based on the investigative report, it was proved that the suspect had accepted a Rs 50,000 bribe to clear the pending bills. The spokesperson said a case has been registered against Gurjit Singh under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Ferozepur Range VB police station. Further investigation into this case was under progress, the spokesperson said.
