Suspected IED found in Ajnala
Panic gripped Ajnala after a suspected IED (Improvised explosive device) was found near a police station here today morning.
The police, including bomb disposal squad, anti-sabotage team and senior officials, reached the spot and started an investigation. The police are checking footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the area to find clues about persons who had dumped the suspected IED outside the police station.
Amritsar (Rural) SSP Charanjit Singh said the bomb disposal squad had collected a bomb like object and sent it for further examination to ascertain whether it was an explosive or a mischievous act by some persons.
“The police have initiated action as per standard operational procedure to ensure safety of the people. The road outside Ajnala police station has been closed for the normal traffic,” he said, while adding that the police had found vital clues in the case and further probe was on.
The police are probing all possible angles, including an act of terrorism, targeting the police station. This was the same police station which was stormed by Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh and his hundreds of supporters to get his follower released from the custody.
A senior police official wishing anonymity said, “After terror-sponsored RPG attacks at the Punjab Police intelligence headquarters in Mohali in 2022 and at the Sarhali police station in Tarn Taran, we cannot rule out that it could possibly had been a similar incident.”
According to sources in the Police Department, the recovered object was like a ball having some wiring. The bomb disposal squad diffused the suspected IED and sent it to the forensic laboratory to ascertain whether it was an explosive device or not. “Only explosive expert could ascertain whether the object is an explosive or something else,” the SSP said.
