Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has again approached the Akal Takht, pleading to expedite the “tankhah” (religious punishment) proceedings.

This was Sukhbir’s second appeal to the Akal Takht after submitting resignation as the president of the party. The party’s working committee is yet to take a call on it.

In the letter dated November 18, addressed to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Sukhbir said he had already been declared “tankhaiah” (guilty of religious misconduct) which has severely impacted his consciousness.

“Now that I have resigned from the SAD president’s post, I want to appear before the Akal Takht as a humble Sikh. Please accept my appeal,” the letter reads in Punjabi.

Sukhbir had submitted his resignation on November 16.

The decision on Sukhbir’s “tankhah” is reportedly pending for want of assembly of five high priests. Sources said they might schedule a meeting next week to decide on the quantum of “tankhah”.
