Sub-inspector shot dead by constable in Manipur
A police sub-inspector was shot dead allegedly by a constable with his service rifle in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Saturday, an officer said.
Sub-inspector Shah Jahan was shot dead from point blank range allegedly by constable Bikramjit in the Mongbung area of the district and an investigation was being conducted, the officer added. Preliminary reports said Jahan had a verbal altercation with Bikramjit on Saturday. The constable had been arrested, the officer said.
A police official said a large number of personnel had been stationed in Mongbung village to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents amid escalating tensions in the district.
The mixed-populated Jiribam district, adjoining southern Assam, has witnessed several incidents of violence this year.
