Student bodies protest against Kolkata doctor’s rape, murder

Student organisations at Punjabi University, Patiala, staged a candlelight march and protest against the gruesome gang rape and murder of a student doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal on August 9.
During the protest march, speeches were given by many students organisation leaders, including Gurdas Singh from PSU, Raspinder Singh Jimmy from PRSU, Harpreet Singh from PSU (L), Pritpal Singh from AISF, Amritpal Singh from SFI and Gagandeep Singh from PSF.
While addressing the students, they all criticised the government for it’s laxity in taking action against the culprits of the horrific crime. They said all across the country, an average of 90 case of rape were reported on the daily, with over 33,000 cases recorded annually.
As a result of this situation, protests have been erupting nationwide, seeking better workplace safety for women.
Doctors and students in government hospitals have shut down OPDs and are staging sit-ins, demanding their safety.
This candlelight march and protest is in solidarity with all the students who are protesting nationwide, stated the students leaders.
The student leaders further said those convicted in previously registered cases were freely roaming on parole, and the culprits in the Bilkis Bano case were released on August 15, 2022, emboldening such heinous criminals in society.
The student organisations demanded that the hearing of this case be conducted by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, and the culprits be immediately given the harshest punishment.
