Statewide drive against traffic violations gains momentum

Taking a strong note of overloading of vehicles as well as other traffic violations, the Himachal Pradesh Police have fined 570 offenders during the first week of its 15-day special drive aimed at promoting road safety and curbing violations.

According to the police, 5,215 vehicles were inspected during random checks and blockades and 570 cases of violations were identified. Of these cases, 365 were of passenger overloading in public transport, 52 cases pertained to overloading in commercial vehicles, 45 cases of unsafe goods transportation, 38 cases of driving without permit, 34 cases of driving without insurance and 26 cases pertained to illegal passenger transport in goods carriers.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Traffic Tourism and Railways, Narvir Singh Rathour said under the leadership of Director General of Police Atul Verma, the state police had initiated a 15-day special drive to promote road safety and curb traffic violations. This campaign will continue till December 2.

“The primary focus of the initiative is to control overloading of vehicles, unsafe transportation of goods and illegal passenger transport in goods carriers,” he said.

He said the objective of the drive was also to ensure the safety of citizens by curbing unsafe transportation practices, to minimise damage to roads caused by overloading and enforce traffic rules strictly to prevent accidents and loss of life and property.

“The targeted violations include overloading in commercial vehicles, transporting goods beyond permissible limit, overloading of passengers in public transport vehicles and illegal passenger transport in goods vehicles,” he said.

The District Superintendents of Police and Railway Police have been directed to formulate effective strategies for the campaign by conducting inspections and taking immediate action against violators, besides reviewing the campaign progress daily.

The police have also appealed to all citizens and vehicle operators to adhere to traffic rules.
