Shaurya Bawa signs off with bronze at World Junior squash

India’s Shaurya Bawa signed off with a bronze medal after going down 0-3 to Egyptian top seed Mohamed Zakaria in the boys’ singles semifinals of the World Junior Squash Championships in Houston. Bawa lost 5-11 5-11 9-11 to last year’s runner-up Zakaria in a 41-minute contest. Bawa is only the second Indian male after Kush Kumar (in 2014) to reach the semifinals of the event.

Carapaz climbs solo to stage victory on Tour de France
Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost climbed solo to victory on Stage 17 of the Tour de France, a 178km ride from Saint-Paul-Trois-chateaux to Superdevoluy on Wednesday. Carapaz, who has also won stages on the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, finished 37 seconds ahead of Jayco Alula’s Simon Yates to claim his first win on the Tour de France, with Movistar’s Enric Mas third, nearly a minute behind. His attack in the mountains, about 13km from the finish, helped the Olympics champion breeze to victory but there was a battle in the general classification behind him as Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar retained his yellow jersey.

Shah likely to take over as ICC chairman this year-end
All eyes will be on BCCI secretary Jay Shah during the four-day ICC Annual Conference in Colombo, starting on Friday, where there might be serious discussions about when he will take over from New Zealander Greg Barclay as the chairman of the global body. The ICC conference that starts with the board meeting on Friday is expected to be dominated by losses to the tune of more than $20 million incurred by the global body for hosting T20 World Cup games in the United States of America.

Real Madrid extend Modric’s contract until the end of 2025
Real Madrid extended Luka Modric’s contract on Wednesday, bringing the Croatia midfielder back for a 13th season with the club. Madrid said it and Modric agreed to extend the player’s contract until June 2025. One of Madrid’s captains, Modric didn’t play as often as a starter this season, but is expected to have a greater role in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield after the retirement of Toni Kroos.
