After a disappointing campaign at the Paris Olympics where the country’s pugilists returned empty-handed, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) invited applications for a new foreign coach. Indian boxers fell short of expectations at the Paris Games with all six pugilists, including reigning world champions Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain, returning without any medal. However, current foreign coach Dmitry Dmitruk, who was appointed last February, will stay on till the end of his two-year contract.

Sindhu, Satwik-Chirag withdraw from Japan Open

PV Sindhu, Lakskya Sen, HS Prannoy and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have withdrawn from the upcoming BWF Japan Open, scheduled to commence on August 24. The Badminton World Federation confirmed that defending champion Viktor Axelsen, fresh from winning his second Olympics gold medal, will be among the star attractions in the tournament. It will be the first major badminton event after the Paris Olympics.

Nadeem gets 10mn rupees from Pakistan’s Punjab govt

Olympics javelin throw champion Arshad Nadeem was rewarded with 10 million rupees and a brand new car by the Punjab government for his historic gold medal-winning feat in the Paris Games. The Punjab CM also gave away a cheque of 50 lakh rupees to Nadeem’s coach Salman Iqbal Butt. Nadeem’s gold was Pakistan’s first after 40 years since the men’s team won the hockey title in 1984. Agencies
