Snow blower to boost winter connectivity in Pangi valley
The Public Works Department (PWD) has procured a state-of-the-art snow blower to improve winter connectivity in Pangi valley, where heavy snowfall often disrupts transportation. The newly acquired machine, worth Rs 2.11 crore, promises quicker and more efficient snow clearance while minimising damage to paved roads caused by traditional earth movers.
Pangi valley, known for its harsh winters, has long relied on JCBs and earth movers for clearing snow, a practice that caused severe road damage and costly annual repairs. The snow blower will now replace these methods in Killar, the sub-divisional headquarters, and its surrounding areas, enhancing road safety and reducing maintenance expenses.
PWD Executive Engineer Ravi Kumar Sharma highlighted the advantages of the new machinery, stating, “The snow blower will allow us to clear snow more efficiently and with minimal damage to the roads.”
Subhash Chauhan, president of the Pangi Block Congress Committee, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh for prioritising tribal area development. He called the deployment of the snow blower a significant step toward ensuring smooth and safe travel for residents during winter. “This initiative will make winter travel safer, smoother, and more efficient,” he added.
Residents protest relocation of HRTC staff
Amid this progress, residents of Pangi valley have strongly opposed the Himachal Road Transport Corporation’s (HRTC) proposal to relocate its staff to Kullu after the first snowfall. They argue that the move will halt bus services, isolating the valley during the winter months.
The relocation practice was discontinued last year following public pressure, leading to uninterrupted bus services — a decision widely appreciated by locals. However, recent reports suggest its revival, sparking concerns among residents.
Local leader Trilok Thakur urged the Chief Minister to intervene. “With improved road conditions this year, thanks to proactive efforts by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and PWD, there is no justification for suspending bus services,” Thakur said.
The BRO has assured that the Sansari Nala-Killar-Thirot-Tandi (SKTT) road will remain operational throughout the winter, deploying machinery and personnel to clear snow and manage avalanches promptly. The PWD has also equipped its divisions with modern snow-clearance machines to keep link roads functional.
Thakur emphasised the need for the state government to replicate last year’s successful model, ensuring uninterrupted bus services for Pangi residents. “With better infrastructure and proactive measures, there is no reason to disrupt connectivity this winter,” he added.
