Former union minister Smriti Irani on Thursday attacked leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that India was subjugated by the East India company and not the British, and that the business conglomerate successfully lured royals of the times into suppression.
"Someone who has converted his own party into a single family private limited company is taking about East India company today. We cannot expect him to know anything about the valour of Rani Laxmibai and other heroes of the independence struggle. Had it not been for those collective struggles the British would have still been here," said Irani, who was defeated by Congress Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma in Amethi.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Irani had defeated Rahul from Amethi.
This time, the Congress had fielded KL Sharma against Irani.
