Gurdaspur, January 20

The police arrested three hardened criminals and seized nine weapons from them last night. Officials claimed that those arrested were planning a “big exercise”. They were nabbed by the police following inputs gathered from their sources.

SSP Harish Dayama said police had concrete evidence that three criminals would enter the city through the Pathankot-Gurdaspur road near Paniyar Sugar Mill. This information was provided by three of their accomplices who were arrested on January 10.

Dayama said once the police was sure something fishy was about to happen last night a team led by Aditya Warrier, ASP, Dinanagar, was formed to nab the criminals.

Warrier, who was back from a training stint just three days ago, is the same officer who confiscated 18 kg of pure grade heroin from three people at a check post near Paniyar Sugar Mill on July 27. The three suspects included a woman who had links with smugglers in Croatia. Warrier and his team had followed narco smugglers all the way to Srinagar before they were nabbed on their return to Gurdaspur.

This was considered the biggest seizure of narcotics ever since Batala was carved out a separate police district from Gurdaspur in 1988.

In last night’s incident,

Rs 15,000 drug money was also seized. The suspects were identified as Kanwaljit Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Many Singh, Balraj Singh, Mehtab Singh and a Darjeeling-based woman Pema Doma Bhutia. She is stated to be a friend of Bhupinder Singh. A case under various Sections of the NDPS Act and the Arms Act was registered against all the six suspects at the Dinanagar police station. Those arrested in last night’s operation included Bhupinder Singh, Kanwaljit Singh and Pema Doma Bhutia. Many Singh, Mehtab Singh and Balraj Singh were arrested on January 10.

“One of the suspects, Many Singh, is a proclaimed offender. He is wanted in the 2020 Batala murder of Mukesh Nayyar, brother of Punjab Shiv Sena vice-president Ramesh Nayyar,” the SSP said.
