Sirmaur set to get 1st heliport in Nahan
In a significant development for Sirmaur district, the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government has approved the construction of a heliport in Nahan. Following the government’s green light, preparations for the heliport project have gained momentum, with the Public Works Department (PWD) recently inviting tenders for the Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) survey. The selected company will conduct a detailed survey, including obstacle assessments and related technicalities. The final budget for the project will be determined based on the survey report.
The proposed heliport will be constructed at Dharkyari Mohal, near Nahan. The district administration has already transferred 11 bighas and 10 biswas of land to the Tourism Department for this purpose. Earlier, all formalities for the heliport had been completed, and a proposal was submitted to the state government for approval. With the OLS survey underway, budget allocation is expected to follow, paving the way for locals and tourists to enjoy air travel from the region in the near future.
According to the 2023 proposal submitted by the district administration, the heliport will be equipped with modern facilities to enhance passenger experience. It will accommodate three helicopters at a time and include a waiting room, adequate seating arrangements, security provisions and a restaurant for passengers. The heliport will function like a mini airport, offering essential amenities to air travellers.
The heliport is expected to significantly benefit both residents and visitors by providing air connectivity to major destinations such as Shimla, Chandigarh and Dharamshala. Details of specific routes and services will be finalised after the heliport’s completion. However, the prospect of air travel has already generated excitement among locals, with hopes of enhanced connectivity and convenience.
Sirmaur district boasts immense tourism potential. It is home to Asia’s first Fossil Park in Suketi, the historic gurdwara in Paonta Sahib, the state’s largest natural lake at Renuka Ji, and the revered shrine of Lord Parshuram. Thousands of devotees also visit the Churdhar peak annually for blessings from Shrigul Maharaj. Nahan, a town rich in historical significance with 400-year-old heritage structures, attracts architecture enthusiasts. Meanwhile, areas like Haripurdhar, Nohradhar and Sangrah are known for their snowfall, drawing winter tourists.
The heliport project is expected to serve as a catalyst for boosting tourism in the district. Improved air connectivity will likely attract more visitors to these destinations, contributing to the local economy and creating employment opportunities.
MLA Ajay Solanki expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhu for approving the heliport project. He described it as a “landmark decision” for Nahan and Sirmaur, emphasising its dual potential to enhance tourism and generate employment. “With the completion of the heliport, Sirmaur will experience a significant transformation, bringing the region closer to major destinations and promoting its rich cultural and natural heritage,” he said.
