Leaking roof of the badminton courts at the Sector 38 sports complex, where the state championships were held, left the players, officials and the spectators furious.

At least three courts, at the member’s arena and two at major (for professional) arena, witnessed continuous dripping of water, as showers lashed the city. The incident happened when the members were using the multipurpose indoor stadium.

In 2019, the Sector 38 Sports Complex was inaugurated along with three other sports complexes by then UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore. The complex was built on more than 2.86 acres for nearly Rs 8 crore. The complex has hosted a dozen of national events and many national and international level shuttlers practise here.

However, water dripping from the roof left everyone shocked. “This is not acceptable. There’s a strong possibility of a player receiving a major injury, as the courts are wet. We are paying user charges, but getting such facilities,” said Satish, a user.

The newly built sports complexes across the city have fabricated structure and roofing sheets. “We were playing when rainwater suddenly started dripping from the roof. For six members, there was only one court left to play. It did not feel like a facility under the UT Administration. I wonder how the professional shuttlers manage to adjust in such situations,” said Anadita, another user.

In the past, such scenes were reported from the sports complexes in Sectors 42 and 43, Sector 23 TT Hall and other venues.
