Panic gripped Jujhar Avenue area on Gumtala (airport) road here when some unidentified miscreants fired gunshots outside the house of an NRI last night.

The incident came to light when an elderly woman Rupinder Kaur living in the house found bullet marks outside the house. She informed the police which reached the spot and started a probe.

According to police, the incident was the outcome of an old enmity and was not related to gangsters.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (West) Shivdarshan Singh said that Rupinder Kaur’s two grandsons – Gursher Singh and Tanroj Singh — live in Canada. He said when Tanroj lived here, he allegedly had a relationship with the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Anmol Gill. This led to an enmity between them.

He said when Tanroj went to Canada, Anmol Gill with the help of his friends there kidnapped and thrashed him. This led to the registration of an FIR against Anmol’s unidentified accomplices in Canada.

“Nine persons were booked by the Canada police of whom three were out on bail,” he said. He added that in order to put pressure on Tanroj to reach a compromise, a fabricated complaint by a woman was lodged against him. Even then, he did not agree to a compromise. Now, the accused Anmol Singh had carried out firing outside his residence in Jhujhar Avenue last night.

The ACP (West) said that a case has been registered against Anmol and his unknown accomplices who fired outside Rupinder Kaur’s house. Efforts were on to identify and arrest them.
