Shimla, August 14

To address parking woes in the state capital, the Shimla Municipal Corporation will construct steel structure parking slots in all 34 wards.

The steel structure parking slots will have the capacity to park a small number of vehicles and will be constructed at suitable places identified by the corporation.

The decision was taken during a recent meeting held under the chairmanship of Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh. Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surender Chauhan as well as councillors apprised the minister of the problems being faced by people due to the lack of adequate parking space in the town.

The minister directed the Municipal Corporation to prepare a proposal regarding the construction of steel structure parking lots across the town.

Besides, the Municipal Corporation sought funds from the minister for the construction of other parking lots in the town. The Mayor said the corporation was seeking budget from the state government for the construction of the parking lots. “About 75% budget for the construction of parking lots will be granted by the state government and the MC will contribute 25%,” said Chauhan.

He said with the availability of the steel structure parking slots and construction of other parking lots, tourists and residents will no longer have to face the problem in finding parking for their vehicles.

According to the MC, the town has parking space for around 20,000 vehicles, including yellow line parking. Due to inadequate parking space, people have no choice but to park their vehicles at the roadside, which leads to congestion and traffic jams. The situation gets worse during the peak tourist season in summers and winters.
