In order to ensure quick redressal of cybercrime related complaints in the state, the Himachal Pradesh Police is going to set up its first data centre — CY Station-I — in the state’s capital Shimla. The data centre is expected to be inaugurated next week.

Mohit Chawla, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Cybercrime, said the main purpose of the data centre would be integration of cybercrime complaints.

He said, “There are three cybercrime police stations in Himachal Pradesh including one each in Shimla, Dharamshala and Mandi. Cybercrime complaints are registered in every part of the state at respective police stations.” “The cyber cells at the district headquarters have been named Integrated Cyber Extended Units (ICE). The first thing that the data centre will do is integration of all the ICE units,” he said.

“The cybercrime helpline number 1930 will also be integrated with National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) on the day of the inauguration of the data centre. With this, a complaint will be registered will be on real time basis. If someone is involved in financial frauds his number and accounts will be hotlisted,” the DIG said.

He said more than 250 complaints of cybercrime were reported every day across the state. He said in the last two months, people were duped of Rs 8.16 crore across the state out of which an amount of Rs 87 lakh had been recovered from fraudsters.

The DIG also advised people to be cautious of cyber fraudsters and refrain from clicking on unknown links and downloading unknown apps on their mobile phones. In July, the police linked the cybercrime helpline number 1930 with the NCRP in order to ensure quick action on complaints. With this, people now are able to register their complaints within 15 to 20 minutes. The 24-hour cybercrime helpline number was launched in the state on March 20, 2023.
