SGPC clarifies advisory board’s role under Akal Takht authority
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has clarified the role of its advisory board, putting an end to speculation. This 11-member board of Sikh intellectuals will operate under the authority of the Akal Takht, adhering to Sikh ‘rehat maryada’ principles. Their primary function will be to address Panthic matters referred to them by the Akal Takht, providing expert opinions to be submitted to and decided upon by the five high priests led by the Akal Takht Jathedar.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the board’s role is advisory, and the final verdict on any matter rests with the Akal Takht.
“The advisory board will only address Panthic issues referred to it by the Akal Takht, not directly tackle any issues on its own. The Akal Takht’s authority remains unparalleled, and its ‘Singh Sahiban’ will hold the final say in all matters. Unfortunately, some media outlets have misinterpreted the board’s purpose, suggesting it aims to undermine the Akal Takht’s authority, which is not the case,” said Dhami.
Existing board members, Dr Inderjit Singh and Dr Amarjit Singh, noted that the advisory panel has existed since 1990, aiming to resolve issues without interfering with Akal Takht’s decisions. “Our committee had never attempted to interfere in the decisions taken by the Akal Takht,” said Dr Inderjit.
The clarification comes after speculation that SGPC had formed a board to challenge Akal Takht’s authority. Dhami attributed the expansion to the unavailability of previous members, ensuring quorum completion and efficient issue resolution.
