Scooterist dies, 4 hurt in mishap
A scooterist was killed while four others, including his pillion rider wife and three children, sustained injuries when their scooter was hit by a speeding car being driven by an ASI of the Punjab Police near village Sarhal Mandi near Phagwara on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Balwinder Kumar of village Pandori near Nakodar. Injured were admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The police have registered a case and arrested car driver Surinder Paul. The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family members after the post-mortem examination.
Rs 11 crore for road repair
Phagwara: Roads in Phagwara are being repaired at 53 points with a budget of Rs 11 crore, Municipal Commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal told this correspondent here on Saturday. She said 1,550 points of streetlights had been identified and the MC was providing streetlights at these points by spending Rs 67 lakh. Bal said Rs 3.25 crore was being spent on the work for water supply in different localities, including Onkar Nagar.
Eight booked for illegal mining
Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked eight persons on the charge of illegal sand mining. The accused have been identified as Kulwindar Singh, Gursewak Singh, Gurjit Singh, residents of Kapurthala, Sukhraj Singh of Mehsampur village and Vikramjit Singh of Baghela village, Dilpreet Singh of Gosian Khan Mohammad village in Ludhiana, Charnjit Singh and Mangi Bhalwan of Chak Bahmannia village. Jang Singh of Gorsian Khan Mohammad village complained to the police that the accused were indulging in illegal sand mining.
Man booked for duping villager
Phagwara: The Cybercrime Police Station Jalandhar Rural, has booked a miscreant for duping a villager of Rs 75,000 to secure a VIP registration number. Gurdeep Singh of Taggar village in Nurmahal complained to the police that a person duped him of Rs 75,000 by promising to secure a VIP registration number on the phone.
Youth booked for kidnapping
Phagwara: The police have booked a youth on the charge of kidnapping a minor girl. The accused had been identified as Rajiv Kumar, alias Kulu, of Sangowal village. Raju of the same village complained to the police that the accused kidnapped his minor daughter on November 21 on the pretext of marriage.
Man booked for selling liquor
Phagwara: The police have booked a villager on the charge of selling illicit country-made liquor. The accused has been identified as Santokh Singh of Gounsuwal village. As many as 20 bottles of hooch and 50 kg of lahan (raw liquor) were recovered from his possession but he managed to flee. A case has been registered.
