SC refuses to stay Haryana oath ceremony, says will impose costs on petitioner

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to stay the oath taking ceremony of Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP Government in Haryana scheduled to be held in Panchkula and cautioned the petitioner that it might impose costs on him for filing such a frivolous petition.

"Do you want us to stall the oath taking of an elected government? We are putting you on guard. We will impose costs. Circulate the papers. We will see…" a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told the petitioner counsel who mentioned the matter for urgent hearing.

It asked the petitioner to circulate three copies of the petition for the three-judge Bench.

Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya is to administer the oath of office and secrecy to Saini, who will become the chief minister of the state for the second time.

The swearing-in ceremony in Panchkula is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and other senior BJP and NDA leaders on Thursday.
