As many as 40 students were appraised about molecular biology techniques related to plant systematics in a workshop and hands-on training organised by Department of Botany, Centre of Excellence, Government College, Sanjauli, in collaboration with Himachal Forest Research Institute (HFRI) on ‘Molecular biology techniques on plant systematics’ under Star DBT Scheme.

During the sessions, students were provided with practical training on DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gel electrophoresis. Students were given hands-on experience with DNA extraction from Buransh leaves, PCR amplification of the extracted DNA, and gel electrophoresis techniques.

Apart from this, students were also taught to prepare agarose gels, load them onto an electrophoretic unit, and load the DNA samples amplified by PCR onto the gels. They were also trained in the use of laboratory equipment such as micropipettes, centrifuges, thermal cyclers, electrophoretic units and gel documentation systems.
