Tonnes of waste had accumulated at the garbage dumps near the main post office and vegetable market as the society was unable to collect sanitation charges, ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 500, from residents, resulting in deficit and delayed payments. An owner of a small house has to pay Rs 50 each month and shopkeepers have to pay Rs 100 to Rs 500, depending on the size of the building.

The Municipal Corporation had to summon hundreds of defaulters through a local court order to recover the dues. On Thursday, the workers celebrated their win at Dr BR Ambedkar Chowk near the historic Ghanta Ghar. The workers have assured that the garbage dumps would be cleared in two days.
