Samriti, Rajat named best athletes of university championship
Smriti Jamwal of Government College, Dharamsala, and Rajat Singh of Government College, Mand Mandiani, in Kangra district clinched the Best Athlete title in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively, at the 47th Himachal Pradesh University Athletic Championship that concluded here yesterday. GDC, Dharamsala, bagged the Overall Winners’ trophy, while GDC, Hamirpur, clinched the runners-up trophy, and GDC, Mandi, was named the second runners up.
In the 4x400-m race (men’s) race, the GDC, Dharamsala, team (Himanshu Rathi, Ashutosh, Vijay Yadav and Akash Kumar) bagged the gold, while the GDC, Hamirpur, team stood second and the GDC, Mandi, won the bronze medal. In the 100-m race, Rajat Singh of the Mand Mandiani college won gold, Manjeet Singh of Dharamsala won silver and Dashrath of Hamirpur won the bronze medal.
In the long jump event, Pallavi of Bilaspur clinched gold, while Ankita of Una stood second and Sadhna of Bilaspur stood third. In the men’s category, Aman of Bilaspur won the gold, while Naman of Hamirpur bagged the silver and Mohit of Chamba won the bronze medal.
In the high jump event, Harsh of Amb won gold, Aditya of Thural bagged silver and Rahul of Haripur, Manali, and Aditya of Hamirpur jointly won the bronze medal.
In the shot-put competition, Karunesh of Nurpur won gold, Kuldeep of Shillai won silver and Menash of Chamba won the bronze medal.
In the hammer throw event, Aditya of Hamirpur won gold, Siddharth of Mandi won silver and Abhinav of PG Centre, Shimla, won the bronze medal.
In triple-jump, Manjeet Rathore of Joginder Nagar won gold, Shvi Darshan of Hamirpur won silver and Himanshu of Kotshera won the bronze medal. HPU, Shimla, Sports Director and Youth Programme In-charge Dr Sanjay Sharma presided over the valedictory function and awarded prizes to the winners.
Dr Sharma said youngsters should stay away from drugs, and turn to sports. He encouraged athletes to work hard to achieve their goals, stating that only continuous practice could convert defeat into victory.
Principal Dr Pramod Singh Patial, organising secretary Dr Pawan Verma, championship supervisor Parvesh Sharma Monty, Prof Neelam Guleria, and Prof Prakash Thakur were among those present at the event.
