The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma has taken strict action against those violating traffic rules and encroaching roads under a special campaign across the city.

Giving information, the CP said during the campaign, 13 FIRs were been registered and 528 notices issued for violations. From January 1 till October, 29,214 traffic challans were issued for flouting traffic norms and a fine of Rs 2.46 crore collected from violators.

He said the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police had declared 17 roads as “No-tolerance roads” and “One-way roads” in the city to ensure smooth flow of traffic and convenience of the public. Sharma said these no-tolerance toads were divided into Zone-1, Zone-2, Zone-3 and Zone-4.

Sharma said some roads, including Adda Hoshiarpur, Jail Chowk, Kamal Palace Road and Railway Station Road, were declared one-way from 8 am to 8 pm to improve traffic management, reduce commutation time and check petty crimes in the city.

He said the entire system operates under the “Emergency response system”. As a part of the campaign, action was taken against traffic rule violators. He said 13 FIRs were registered at multiple police stations for violating traffic rules. He said 528 notices under Section 144 of the CrPC were issued to individuals illegally occupying roads, including shop owners, street vendors, hotels and shopping malls. He said they were strictly asked to clear encroachments on roads.
