Malerkotla, August 20

Continuing their earlier endeavour to enable girls to handle risky situations and learn self-defence, office-bearers of various units of the Rotary Club of this region have launched a comprehensive programme to persuade managers and employers to implement a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment at their respective work places.

Rotary International District 3090 Chief Advisor Amjad Ali said presidents and secretaries of more than 125 units of the Rotary Club from various parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan had announced that a comprehensive programme would be launched to sensitise constituents of various government and private organisations about the need of implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policy.

An oath was taken in response to an appeal made by enthusiasts led by District Governor Dr Sandeep Chauhan during the concluding session of a function held at Samana.

Educational institutes, hospitals, malls, factories and government offices were named among target entities and their organisers are being coordinated for the implementation of the programme being launched to prevent gruesome incidents such as the recent incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

Appreciating the concern shown by office-bearers and activists of various units of the Rotary International towards the safety and dignity of women, District Governor Chauhan said several units of Malerkotla and Sangrur district had already constituted special teams of volunteers that would update the managers of target organisations about the elements of women safety.

“Having launched the programme after paying tributes to the victim of the Kolkata incident, we have prepared a draft plan for sensitising all stakeholders about the need to implement the POSH policy at every working place,” said Chauhan while appreciating that senior functionaries in the administration had also offered to provide necessary support for facilitating provision of a safe environment for women in society.
