Gupta, who has previously served as Leader of the Opposition from April 16, 2015, to February 11, 2020, is a seasoned politician with a long history in public service. An alumnus of the Shri Ram College of Commerce, Gupta is a three-time councillor from Rohini and a former vice-president of Delhi University Students Union.

Gupta’s political journey began in 1997 when he was elected a councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In 2002, he was elevated to the position of Secretary of BJP Delhi. Although he lost the 2009 Lok Sabha election from the Chandni Chowk constituency to Congress leader Kapil Sibal, Gupta continued to play a pivotal role in Delhi politics. He served as the BJP Delhi President from May 15, 2010, and contested the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election from New Delhi, where he was defeated by Arvind Kejriwal.

In the 2015 Delhi state elections, Gupta ran for the Rohini constituency and was one of the three BJP candidates to secure a victory. His leadership abilities were recognized when he was appointed the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly on April 16, 2015. Gupta further solidified his position in the 2020 Delhi legislative assembly election, where he defeated AAP candidate Rajesh Nama ‘Bansiwala’ by a margin of over 12,000 votes.

Following the appointment of Gupta as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, the AAP expressed hope that Gupta would engage in constructive and positive politics, both inside and outside the Assembly.
