The PAU police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers and arrested six of its members. The police recovered six mobile phones, five motorcycles and sharp weapons from them.
The suspects have been identified as Paramvir Singh, a resident of Talwara, Deepak of Malakpur, Vishal, alias Bhoot, a resident of Amrit Colony, Gurmit Singh of Malakpur, Vikas, alias Teda, a resident of Amrit Colony, and Harshdeep, alias Nanni, of Dashmesh Nagar.
ADCP Shubham Aggarwal, ACP (West) Gurdev Singh and SHO, PAU police station, inspector Rajinderpal Singh, issued a joint statement in this regard.
Police officials said on September 15, Mangal Singh was going towards Ludhiana from the Hambran side. When he stopped his motorcycle to attend a phone call, six robbers came on three motorcycles and cornered him. They looted a mobile phone and Rs 3,000 in cash from the victim. When the police started a probe into the case, the suspects were identified. After getting a tip-off regarding their location, the police erected a naka at a strategic point where the bike-borne miscreants were signalled to stop for checking. The suspects tried to flee but the police team managed to chase them. While fleeing the scene, two of them fell off their vehicles and suffered injuries.
During preliminary questioning, they confessed that they had committed several snatching and loot incidents in Ludhiana in the recent past. They usually threaten to kill victims by pointing sharp weapons at them and loot valuables, they said.
Gurmit, Deepak, Vishal and Harshdeep had a criminal background as cases were registered against them at the PAU and Sarabha Nagar police stations in the past. Now, further questioning of the suspects is on to inquire about the role of the gang in past crime incidents.
SHO Rajinderpal said five motorcycles stolen by the suspects from city areas in the recent past were also recovered.
