Road to Masrur temples cries for repair
The Nagrota Suriya-Lanj road that connects the monolithic temples at Masrur is in a shambles. With the top layer of the road washed away during the recent rains, the gravel is spread all over. The road has developed deep potholes at many places, causing a lot of inconvenience to commuters.
Tourists who visit the heritage site and Pong Wetland area are left disappointed due to the poor condition of the 13-km stretch. A bumpy ride takes out all the fun and excitement of reaching the great archaeological site.
The just concluded rainy season has taken a heavy toll on the road as it lacks proper drainage. Water-filled potholed road often leads to serious accidents. Also, being the only route to the Tanda hospital, the poor condition of the road causes great inconvenience to patients.
According to the department concerned, money has been sanctioned and the work for the road repair has been awarded. But it is taking an exceptionally long time.
“The poor condition of the road is the biggest obstacle in the way of the development of Masrur as a tourist attraction. The department concerned and political leaders should act fast,” said Satish who takes the road daily to his workplace in Kangra.
According to Kushal Singh who runs a restaurant, the authorities concerned have probably failed to pay attention to the maintenance of the road that is crying for attention. He was annoyed at the alleged apathetic attitude of the authorities concerned after the road was damaged in the rains.
PWD Executive Engineer was unavailable for his comments despite repeated calls.
