Revival of Raja ka Talab set in motion
The state government has initiated plans to revive the neglected Raja ka Talab pond in Fatehpur, Kangra district, following longstanding demands from local residents. The historic pond, once a natural water body of significance, had been left unattended for years, with silt and weeds overtaking it. During Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s visit to Fatehpur in March, local MLA Bhiwani Singh highlighted the need for the pond’s restoration. Responding to the appeal, the CM approved a revival project, sanctioning Rs 70 lakh for the endeavour, with an initial allocation of Rs 10 lakh to begin work. The Jal Shakti Department has since been tasked with drafting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the revival.
Vishrut Bharti, SDM, Fatehpur, along with local officials, recently inspected the site. Bharti shared that Kangra Deputy Commissioner Anand Malligavad, also known as the “Lake Man” for his extensive work in restoring lakes across India, provided key insights for the project. Malligavad, who has successfully revived 115 lakes nationwide, suggested immediate measures such as redirecting wastewater drainage away from the pond, and removing invasive water hyacinth and alligator weeds.
The next steps include clearing the silt that has accumulated in the pond. Once fully revived, the Jal Shakti Department plans to install fountains around the pond, enhancing its beauty and functionality. A local committee will be formed to ensure ongoing maintenance.
This restoration project is not only a response to local demands but also a significant step in preserving Fatehpur’s heritage. The town of Raja ka Talab itself is named after this pond, underscoring its cultural importance in the region.
