Desraj, a retired principal from the Education Department in Panchayat Tarkhankad of Shahpur subdivision, Kangra district, has emerged as a role model for utilising the government’s solar energy policy to generate substantial income while promoting environmental sustainability. By setting up a 1000 kW solar power plant on 50 kanals of his land, he earns Rs 4 lakh to 5 lakh per month and aims to inspire others to follow suit.

After retiring, Desraj dreamed of contributing to rural development. Utilising his ancestral land, which was unsuitable for profitable farming due to stray and wild animals, he applied under the government’s solar energy policy. To expand the project, he also leased 50 kanals of land from private owners at Rs 3 lakh. His initiative aligns with the state’s goal of promoting renewable energy under its Green Revolution.

The solar plant operates efficiently, producing 90–95% of its capacity in summers and about 60% in winters. With an annual revenue projection of Rs 50–55 lakh, Desraj expects to recover the project’s costs within 8–10 years, ensuring significant profits for the following 15 years.

Desraj highlights the dual benefits of solar energy—environmental protection and economic viability. Solar projects require minimal setup time and provide a reliable energy source for various applications. Motivated by his father’s vision, Desraj’s son, a B.Tech graduate, has decided to manage the solar plant, focusing on self-reliance instead of seeking employment.

Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa praised Desraj’s efforts and affirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating solar energy projects in Kangra district. He emphasised that electricity generated by such plants is purchased by the Electricity Department, offering financial incentives to participants. Project Officer Ramesh Thakur added that the government has launched various schemes to encourage solar energy adoption and is actively motivating people to harness its potential.

Desraj’s initiative serves as a blueprint for combining renewable energy development with self-employment opportunities, proving that solar power can be both an environmental and economic boon.
