Residents demand paediatrician, gynaecologist for Keylong hospital
Residents of Lahaul and Spiti have urged the state government to appoint a paediatrician and gynaecologist at the district hospital at Keylong. At present, the hospital has a surgeon, orthopaedic specialist and an anaesthesia expert but the absence of paediatric and a gynaecological care has posed challenges to people in accessing necessary treatment.
Rigzin Samphel Heyreppa, a resident of Lahaul, says that their area has become a thriving tourist destination after the opening of the Atal Tunnel. He adds that with the influx of visitors, the demand for reliable health facilities has increased but the region lacks essential medical services. “We need better healthcare facilities to support tourism and ensure the well-being of local residents,” he says.
Kunga Bodh, a member of the District Council for Lahaul and Spiti, underscores the pressing need for a paediatrician and gynaecologist to deliver essential healthcare services directly to the community. As the winter sets in and heavy snowfall becomes imminent, residents face greater difficulties in accessing medical care outside the valley. “The government must send doctors, who are committed to serving in this tribal district, especially during harsh winter months,” he adds.
Local resident Mohan Lal Relingpa criticises political parties for their failure to fulfil promises made to them regarding improvement in healthcare facilities made during election campaigns. “Once they are in power, they ignore the problems of the citizens,” he adds.
Lahaul and Spiti residents are particularly concerned about the health of children and expectant mothers, who require consistent access to medical care. “We urge the state government to prioritise the deployment of a paediatrician and a gynaecologist at the Keylong hospital,” they add.
Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana has also raised the issue with the government, advocating for better healthcare facilities in the district. Meanwhile, the Lahaul and Spiti health authorities have also informed the higher authorities of the Health Department in Shimla regarding vacant posts of specialist at the Keylong hospital.
