Bhiwani, August 27

They alleged that they had taken up the matter with the district administration several times but the authorities had failed to take action.

Meena Devi, a resident of Lajpat Nagar, said their locality was a low-lying area which aggravated the problem of waterlogging and sewage overflow. She said the sewage water and storm water remained accumulated in the streets of the locality for days together. “The sewerage system is not effective especially in the monsoon season,” she said.

She said the locality, which was part of Ward 18 had about 1,500 houses which were at the receiving end of the problem of choked sewerage system. “We met the Deputy Commissioner recently who assured us of cleaning the sewer line but nothing has been done so far,” she said. Devi said that the municipal councillor of the area, Suresh Tanwar, visited the area today and assured them that the problem would be resolved at the earliest.

Another woman Kamlesh Rani said that the sewerage system remained blocked for days. The problem aggravated when the sewage started backflowing when it rained. She said that they had been living in unhygienic conditions in the absence of an efficient sewerage and drainage system in the town.

The police and a junior engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Kunal Kumar, reached the spot and assured the residents that the sewerage line would be cleaned by tomorrow evening. The protesters warned the administration that if their problem is not resolved they would protest again.
