The Shiromani Akali Dal rebel leaders today criticised the use of force by the Chandigarh Police against students protesting over the delay in the election to Panjab University’s Senate.

Former Member of Parliament and senior leader Prem Singh Chandumajra targeted the government, calling the use of force a direct threat to democracy. Chandumajra was on the campus to meet students along with former Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa and former Punjab Cabinet Minister Sikander Singh Maluka.

Chandumajra said, “The government must uphold democratic values and refrain from using tactics that only serve to create fear among the people,” he stated, adding that the Punjabi community would not tolerate any infringement on their rights.

The leaders claimed that these actions create instability and pose risk to Punjab’s social and political structure. The Akali Dal rebels urged the Central Government to ensure that elections were conducted fairly, without the use of coercive measures.
