Rain floods Panipat, Sonepat localities, residents hassled

Heavy rain in Panipat and Sonepat on Thursday led to waterlogging on most roads in both towns, much to the inconvenience of residents as well as intercity commuters.
Panipat witnessed 46mm rain, Samalkha 85mm, Israna 67 mm, Bapoli 18 mm and Madlauda 56 mm. Similarly, Sonepat received 54 mm rain, Gannaur 62 mm, Gohana 21 mm, Kharkhoda 7 mm, Khanpur Kalan 37 mm and Rai 59 mm.
In Sonepat, heavy rain submerged not only the main roads, but also several residential areas, including Sectors 14 and 15, Shani Temple, Kakroi chowk and Geeta Bhawan chowk areas, besides the local bus stand and the NH-44. Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar along with other officials visited Murthal on the GT Road, Bahalgarh, Rai, Kundli and Jathedi Road.
The DC directed officials if water was found accumulated on roads after one or two hours of the rain, strict action would be initiated against those concerned. He said the drainage of water should be smooth and no laxity would be tolerated. He directed NHAI officials to find a permanent solution for the drainage of water from the highways.
In Panipat, the downpour started in the early hours on Thursday. The NH-44, Assandh road, Ram Lal chowk, Model Town, Insar market, Bishan Saroop Colony, Sukhdev Nagar, SD College market road, Sanjay chowk, Chaura Bazar, Gurdwara market, Sectors 11-12, colonies in Tehsil camp area and outer colonies were waterlogged.
