Quick notes: Diksha escapes unhurt from car accident
Indian golfer Diksha Dagar, who is due to take part in the Olympics next week, has escaped unhurt from a car accident and will compete in her event as scheduled. Diksha was involved in an accident late on Tuesday night. Her father, who also doubles up as her caddie, also came out injury-free from the incident. Her brother had minor injuries, while her mother hurt her back and needed to be hospitalised.
Hockey team loses 1-2 to Belgium
The Indian men’s hockey team suffered its first loss of the Olympics, going down 1-2 to defending champions Belgium after letting slip a one goal lead in a pool match. Abhishek gave India the lead in the 18th minute before Belgium made a strong comeback after half-time to score through Thibeau Stockbroekx (33rd) and John-John Dohmen (44th) to seal the win and remain unbeaten in the tournament so far. Both India and Belgium have already qualified for the quarterfinals from Pool B.
Swiatek stunned in semis by China’s Zheng
Iga Swiatek will have to wait four more years to try and win an Olympic gold medal after the Polish top seed was shocked by China’s Zheng Qinwen in the semi-finals at Roland Garros — her first loss there since 2021. Swiatek, the overwhelming favourite for gold after a third successive French Open title this year confirmed her as the Queen of Clay, was outplayed 6-2 7-5 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
