Municipal Corporation Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh held a crucial meeting with solid waste management company Averda’s Chief Finance Officer (CFO) Michel Nassour to discuss the pressing issue of solid waste management here on Saturday. The two-hour meeting yielded promising results, with MC Commissioner Aulakh expressing optimism about the future of waste management in the city.

The MC Commissioner revealed that the meeting focused on key areas, including door-to-door garbage collection, bioremediation at the dump, and setting up a waste-to-energy plant. These initiatives aim to transform Amritsar’s waste management landscape, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.

The MC Commissioner’s discussions with Michel Nassour, who travelled from Dubai for the meeting, centered on finding sustainable solutions. Averda Company is expected to submit a written notice to the municipal corporation by October 20. This will be followed by a meeting between MC Commissioner Aulakh, Michel Nasoor, and the CEO, Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC), on Monday, October 21, where a final decision will be made.

Officials of the Health and Sanitation Departments are hopeful that this meeting with senior company officials will yield positive results, addressing the long-standing issue of solid waste management. Aulakh emphasized that in the coming days, he will focus on waste management.

It is worth mentioning here that as the city’s preparations for the Gurpurb of Guru Ram Das are underway, garbage piles remain unaddressed, sparking an outrage among local politicians too. Former Rajya Sabha member Shwait Malik strongly condemned the government and the municipal corporation for their negligence. “It’s shameful that the city’s administrators could not even ensure a clean path for this sacred procession. The lack of basic civic amenities reflects poorly on our city’s governance,” Malik stated.
