While condemning the November 1984 anti-Sikh violence in India, the California State Assembly in the US has urged the United States Congress to formally recognise and condemn it as genocide.

A Bill, which was Introduced by Assembly member Jasmeet Kaur Bains, the first-ever elected Sikh member of the State Assembly on March 22, 2023, was passed by the unanimous vote today.

It was co-sponsored by Assembly member Carlos Villapudua, a Sikh sympathiser. Only Hindu member Ash Kalra voted in its favour.

Pritpal Singh, coordinator of the American Sikh Caucus Committee, and other US Sikh bodies expressed gratitude towards member for introducing and passing the resolution. The Sikh Caucus Committee thanked Dr Iktidar Karamat Cheema, member of the UN Global Steering Committee, for his consultations and raising these issues at UN level.
