Trucks plying in Abohar city a cause for concern
A heavy vehicle (truck) rammed into a tree outside the Government High School on South Circular Road today morning. As major part of the tree fell across the divider, it led to a traffic jam.
When informed, Mayor Vimal Thatai arranged a JCB machine which removed the broken tree. The entire task was completed just before the nagar kirtan organised in connection with the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.
The residents said the previous government had reduced the width of this road by doubling the size of the footpath under the “Chokho Punjab” scheme.
Later, the construction of dividers and the footpath stopped midway due to non-availability of funds from the incumbent state government.
The miffed residents said ban on heavy vehicles from entering the city was limited to just files. Whenever, heavy vehicles enter the old grain market from Kesarganj Gate, the traffic comes to a standstill.
“As the administration has failed to control the entry of trucks and increase the width of this terminal, commuters are always at the risk,” said the residents.
Though the state government had ordered arhtiyas to shift their business to the new grain market around 30 years ago, some running their business in the old mandi get their supplies through
heavy vehicles.
