Muktsar, August 21
Taking a suo motu cognisance of the news report ‘73% water samples fail test in Muktsar’ that appeared in the columns of The Tribune, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission called for a report of water samples from the Deputy Commissioner, Muktsar Municipal Council, and the secretary of the Punjab Local Bodies Department. The commission sought for the report on or before the next date of hearing on September 25.
It was highlighted in the news report that over 73 per cent water samples collected in the district failed the potability test in over six months of the ongoing year. Moreover, the water samples that failed the test had bacterial contamination or hardness level beyond permissible limits.
The report also stated that the groundwater in most parts of the district was unfit for human consumption and a number of reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plants installed by state government were lying shut due to various snags.
