Speaker exhorts farmers to opt for diversification
Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has called upon farmers to come forward to adopt crop diversification and said they should shun the wheat-paddy cycle and adopt other alternative crops, besides making a joint strategy to answer charges levelled by the BJP-led Centre.
In a press release, Sandhwan said farmers should refrain from cultivating wheat and paddy and earn handsome returns by growing other crops such as oil seeds. He said by adopting crop diversification, they could also evade restrictions imposed by the BJP government.
Emphasising the need to reduce the area under paddy, he said the Centre was trying to push the agricultural sector into crisis. It was suppressing farmers’ struggle at the behest of corporates, he alleged. He said BJP leaders were holding farmers responsible for deteriorating air quality. Instead of resolving farmers’ issues, they were being harassed under a political conspiracy, he said.
