New Delhi, January 1
Amid high drama at the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), its general secretary Harmeet Singh Kalka today said Manjinder Singh Sirsa’s resignation had been unanimously accepted and forwarded to the general house.
DSGMC vice-president Kulwant Singh Bath had been entrusted with the responsibility of the president, Kalka said.
After the meeting, Sirsa, however, maintained that only the general house of the committee could accept his resignation. “I will work as DSGMC president till January 20. After that, I will not be part of it and won’t have any link with the committee.”
Kalka said nine out of 12 members of the interim board attended the meeting and several resolutions were passed so that the work of the committee could run smoothly.
The power to convene a meeting of the interim board of the committee lies with the secretary general, said Kalka. Sirsa, who tendered his resignation, did not have the authority to convene a meeting of the board, he maintained. An interim board meeting would be convened every week so that the management could be run smoothly, Kalka said.
In August 2021, Sirsa lost the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee poll from the Punjabi Bagh seat as a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, although his party won 27 of the 46 seats. He, however, continued as DSGMC president after being nominated under the SGPC quota. Last month, he joined the BJP and quit the post.
