Chandigarh, August 13

A delegation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) led by its president Harjinder Singh Dhami today met Chief Gurdwara Election Commissioner Justice SS Saron, with a demand to ensure the registration of eligible Sikh voters for the general election of the SGPC and to do this process in a transparent matter.

Dhami submitted a letter to Justice Saron and asked him to seriously take notice of the matter of wrong SGPC votes being registered without verification by the government officials during the ongoing registration process, while ignoring the rules and demanded action against the culprits.

Dhami said complaints were coming from community members from various constituencies of Punjab that government officials were ignoring the prescribed rules for voter registration for gurdwara elections. He said the government employees were registering votes while ignoring the rules by picking up names from the voter lists of the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha, with which there is a strong apprehension of violation of condition of being a ‘sabat soorat’ (with unshorn hair) Sikh.
