SGPC sends legal notice to makers of Kangana Ranaut-starrer movie ‘Emergency’
Amritsar, August 27
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sent a legal notice to the makers of Kangana Ranaut-starrer movie “Emergency”, which allegedly misrepresents the character and history of Sikhs in some of its sequences.
The SGPC has demanded the removal of objectionable scenes in the light of Sikh sentiments.
In the notice, sent by advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, legal adviser to the SGPC, the producers of the film, including Kangana, have also been asked to remove the trailer, released on August 14, from all public and social media platforms and seek written apology from the Sikh community.
Kangana, now a Member of Parliament from Mandi (HP), has played the lead role of Indira Gandhi, directed the film and is one of producers too.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh said separate letters were also written to Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw and Central Board of Film Certification’s Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, demanding to examine the film script before its release on September 6.
In a sequence, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is reportedly shown as promising Indira Gandhi to secure votes for the Congress in lieu of a separate Sikh state. He claimed that in the film, Sikhs, including Bhindranwale, were shown as separatists and terrorists, which was far from truth.
“The film should be banned keeping in view the resentment in the Sikh community. If the objectionable anti-Sikh scenes are not removed from the film, legal action will be taken against the makers of the film,” he said.
