SGPC chief apologises before Punjab State Women’s Commission
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami today appeared before the Punjab State Women’s Commission and apologised for his remarks against SAD leader Bibi Jagir Kaur recently.
Commission Chairperson Raj Lalli Gill said Dhami's advocate had filed a letter and he came here to meet me and regretted his remarks. "I seek an apology for my remark against Bibi Jagir Kaur and entire women section. In this context, I will abide by the orders of the commission," the letter read.
Gill said she had spoken to Bibi Jagir Kaur earlier who had also expressed her displeasure over it.
"Mere apologising does not absolve him of the act," Gill said, adding that she would discuss the reply furnished by Dhami with the commission and proceed further in the matter accordingly.
The commission had taken suo motu cognisance of Dhami's remarks under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women’s Commission Act, 2001. A notice was issued to Dhami to appear before the commission with a written explanation for his comment on or before December 17.
The panel’s attention was drawn to an audio recording circulating on the social media in which the 68-year-old allegedly used ‘highly offensive and demeaning’ language during a telephonic conversation with a journalist, targeting Bibi Jagir Kaur.
