Faridkot, June 12

Residents along with social activists today staged a dharna at the Deputy Commissioner’s residence after the forest and canal departments allegedly axed and burnt a large number of trees in the name of cleaning dead grass, fallen branches and leaves.

The protesters alleged that despite repeated requests, the administration was taking no action against erring officials.

The protesters blocked Kotkapura-Faridkot Road and accused the Deputy Commissioner Ruhi Dugg of not addressing the serious issue.

Later, Dugg had a word with the protesters and gave an assurance of taking stern action against those axing and burning trees. “Many officials of the forest and canal departments are hand in glove with mafia, thus causing immense loss to flora and fauna. Instead of picking up dead leaves, they are being set on fire,” rued the protesters.

“We lodged many complaints, but instead of taking any action, officials keep on shifting the responsibility,” alleged members of the Society for Ecological and Environment Resources.

The Deputy Commissioner said a nodal officer would also be appointed in the district to deal with all such issues.
