‘Quit India’: Sangrur farmers to corporates

Sangrur, August 9

On the call of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), members of several farm unions today observed “Corporates Quit India Day” on the Sangrur-Barnala road.

The protesters also burnt an effigy of corporate houses. Bhupinder Singh Longowal, convener, Kirti Kisan Union, Youth Wing, said on August 8, 1942, Quit India Movement was launched against the Britishers. “Now the corporate houses are looting the country. The pro-people policies have been put on the backburner by the governments,” he said.

Farm leaders said, “Seed, fertilisers and agriculture machinery is under direct control of the corporates. The farmers cannot become prosperous till the control of such items remain with the corporate houses.” They added that the farmers had been pushed under heavy debt.

The protesters called upon the farmers to hold dharnas outside the houses of ministers on August 17. — OC
