Punjab reports 350 new coronavirus cases, 7 deaths in 24 hours

State tally inches closer to 10,000 with 246 deaths

Punjab reported 350 cases of coronavirus and seven deaths due within a span of 24 hours, taking the state’s tally to 9,792 infections with 246 deaths.

Amritsar reported three of Saturday’s seven deaths, the state’s COVID bulletin showed—a development that takes the state’s death toll to 63. Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Kapurthala, Amritsar, and SAS Nagar each reported a death, making up the rest of the count.

The bulletin showed that five districts—Ludhiana (73), Jalandhar (73), Patiala (48), Amritsar (31), SAS Nagar (28) and Sangrur (23)—accounted for 78 per cent of Saturday’s cases.

Gurdaspur (4), Pathankot (1), SAS Nagar (3), Hoshiarpur (12), Ferozepur (15), Fatehgarh Sahib (4), Faridkot (6), Moga (10), Bathinda (4), Ropar (7), Kapurthala (1), Fazilka (7) and Mansa (1) made up the rest of the count on Saturday.

District-wise breakup of cases now stands thus: Ludhiana (1767), Jalandhar (1616), Amritsar (1225), Patiala (880), Sangrur (721), SAS Nagar (520), Gurdaspur (307), Pathankot (268), SBS Nagar (258), Hoshiarpur (258),Tarn Taran (222), Ferozepur (215), Fatehgarh Sahib (196), Faridkot (196), Moga (194), Muktsar (170), Bathinda (177), Kapurthala (149), Ropar (158), Fazilka (149), Barnala (79), Mansa (67).

Death toll stands thus: Ludhiana (42), Jalandhar (33), Amritsar (63),  Sangrur (21), Patiala (19), Gurdaspur (10), Pathankot (9), SAS Nagar (10), Hoshiarpur (8), Tarn Taran (6), Kapurthala (8), Bathinda (4), Moga (4), Ferozepur (4), Fatehgarh Sahib (2),  Muktsar (1), Barnala (2), SBS Nagar (2),and Ropar (1).

Punjab has been seeing a steady rise in coronavirus cases in the past two months. June and July together account for 7,529 cases—over 76 per cent of the state’s cases. The state has reported 4,224 cases in July alone. 

Three districts—Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar—account for 46 per cent of the states infections and 56 per cent of its deaths.

July has seen Ludhiana and Jalandhar reporting an alarming rise in cases—Ludhiana has reported 927 new cases since the beginning of July, and Jalandhar has reported 878 in the same period. For comparison, Ludhiana reported 647 new cases and Jalandhar recorded 493 in June.

Punjab has 3,092 active cases.
