Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria — during his four-day visit to the state’s border districts — has called for collective efforts to combat cross-border narco and arms smuggling through drones, eradication of drug abuse and for addressing border belt farm issues.

The Governor emphasised to equip the India-Pakistan border with the requisite anti-drone technology and CCTV cameras on priority.

“Tackling drones which fly in narcotics and arms from the Pakistan side is still a challenge before us. The process of installing an anti-drone system has already been started. At present, only 12 anti-drone equipment have been installed. But we need to expedite it keeping in view the 553-km area bordering Pakistan. Similarly, CCTV cameras are also being installed at vulnerable border spots which may be completed within 2-3 months,” he said.

Flagging the important role of village defence committees (VDCs) in keeping the Border Security Force (BSF) and the police informed about suspicious activities, the Governor said that their commendable services would continue to be recognised.

To address drug abuse, he said that with the coordination of the Centre and state governments, opportunities would be provided to the border belt’s youth. He also distributed sports kits to encourage youth participation.

He showed equal concern towards farmers, especially those who own land beyond the border fence. They continue to struggle in getting the ‘inconvenience compensation’ of Rs 10,000 per acre due to the apathy of governments coupled with the official rigmarole.

The Centre and state government equally bear the compensation amount annually. “I am aware that dues from 2023 are pending. I will coordinate with the governments to get the dues paid,” he said.
